Coconut Grove Playhouse Board Accepts Theater’s Historic Designation

Miami, FL (January 3, 2007) – By unanimous vote, The Board of  Directors of the Coconut Grove Playhouse has decided to drop its appeal of the historic designation made by the Miami Historic and Environmental Preservation Board.  In accepting historic designation, the Playhouse Board is making a commitment to move forward at the appropriate time in partnership with the City, the Coconut Grove Village Council, the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board and other key stakeholders to explore plans for the facility that maintain the character of the building and are complementary to the character of the Grove.

“This is one of many steps that the Coconut Grove Playhouse Board is taking to re-establish the theater as one of the most significant institutions in Miami,” said Shelly Spivack, Board Chair. “We continue to work with a reputable team of professional consultants, partners, stakeholders and supporters, such as Miami-Dade County government’s Department of Cultural Affairs, to face all of the challenges before us in a strategic way.”

“We realize that there is much work to be done before the Playhouse is ready to begin working on plans for the property, but I am pleased to see this step being taken and pledge my support to helping the Board reach its goal of making the Coconut Grove Playhouse a vibrant contributor to the economic and cultural fabric of Miami once again,” said Miami City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff.
