PRESS ALERT: Mounting concern about the City's plans for the Grove Waterfront

PRESS ALERT: Mounting concern about the City's plans for the Grove Waterfront

PRESS ALERT:

WHO:     Tomorrow morning (APRIL 19 AT 9 AM) the Coconut Grove Business Improvement Committee (BIC) will meet at City Hall.  The BIC was formed to improve the Grove’s commercial district, and is led by its self-appointed chair, Commissioner Johnny Winton.

WHAT:
The City has promised the residents of Coconut Grove a public planning process for the Coconut Grove waterfront and is in the final stages of negotiating a contract with a world-renowned planning firm, Sasaki Associates.

There should be no plan of any kind until the professional planners consider the environmental, economic, traffic, and quality of life concerns of Coconut Grove residents and businesses, and the plan for the waterfront should come out of that public planning process.

In spite of the City’s promise to the residents of Coconut Grove, an agenda item for tomorrow morning’s BIC meeting is a presentation by the City Manager regarding the possible relocation of the Coconut Grove Playhouse to Dinner Key (within the scope of the waterfront plan).

Our committee has been working to protect the citizens’ right to participate in decisions regarding what will be done (or not be done) with Coconut Grove’s most important natural resource, its waterfront.  We do not take any position about what should be done except that the process must invite and utilize the results of extensive public input so that the resulting plan reflects the desires and needs of our Coconut Grove community.

WHEN: We hope that you will attend the BIC meeting at 9:00 AM tomorrow, APRIL 19, 2005,  as well as other related meetings to help keep the public informed about what the City may be trying to do behind the scenes, in small meetings like the BIC, outside of the planning process.

CITY HALL
