Groves Stomps the Red Carpet
Movie premieres in true village style

If the searchlights at the Woman's Club of Coconut Grove didn't reel you in, then perhaps the array of glittering "movie stars" arriving in rickshaws and walking the illuminated red carpet did.

Emcee Glenn Terry announced the arrival of the star look-alikes: Marilyn Monroe, Groucho Marx, the "Governator," Shirley McLaine, Marlena Dietrich, Donald Trump and his pregnant wife Melania, Whoopie Goldberg, Liz Taylor, Isadora Duncan, John Lennon, Janis Joplin, Shirley Temple, Willie Nelson, and Cher. And who was that well-known couple wearing two big boxes and lots of bubble wrap?

It was a true Coconut Grove event – the way only Grovites can do it. Thus unfolded the world premiere of "Don't Box Me In – A Coconut Grove Story" chronicling The Grove First's efforts to keep Home Depot out of the village. Produced and directed by Richard Fendelman of Expect a Miracle Productions, the film presented the Grove as a quiet and idyllic residential neighborhood. The film was serious, yet it was also funny. There was no violence, and it was definitely rated PG13.

The Grove First, under the leadership of Marc Sarnoff, financed the production with the help of private donations. Supporters have vowed to fight to the bitter end, arguing that a big box store would adversely affect quality of life in the Grove.

Guest speaker Al Norman, author of "Slam Dunking Wal-Mart" said, "This film was one of the most creative and entertaining anti-big-box events I have ever attended, and I was honored to be part of the film." Commissioner Tomas Regalado who has opposed the Home Depot store in the Grove from the very beginning, addressed the standing-room-only audience. There were two showings of the film and DVDs were handed out to all that attended.

Eleven local restaurants supported the event and contributed food: Berries, Café Med, Gardner's Market, Greenstreet Café, Jaguar, Mr. Moe's, N.Y. Pizza, Seńor Frogs, Taverna, Tuscany, and Tutu Tango. DVDs are still available at 3000 Shipping Ave. or by emailing info@thegrovefirst.com.
