Bay Heights seeks support from Home Depot foes
Hoping to gain some insight—and support—for their own battle against development, the Bay Heights Homeowner’s Association recently joined the One Grove Alliance in its fight against Home Depot.“Some of our

members could care less about Home Depot,” said Murray Marcus, president of the Bay Heights association. “You could build Yankee Stadium there for all I care.”

What Bay Heights homeowners do care about is several proposed projects at nearby Mercy Hospital that may impact traffic on Bayshore Drive, Tigertail Avenue and U.S. 1—roads already clogged with rush hour traffic. Among the proposed buildings is a two-story addition to the emergency room, the 300 unit Residences at Mercy Hospital condominium by the Related Group, a seven-story medical office with 60,000 square feet of office space and a 4-story parking garage for 653 autos.

“What you guys have done with Home Depot is impressive, but we have to look deeper,” Marcus said. “If we don’t take on all the problems, we’ll be prisoners in our own homes. Traffic on U.S. 1 is already a prison!”

One Grove Alliance member Will Johnson suggests the Bay Heights group begin collecting signatures on petitions and offered One Grove’s resources to help start the effort.
